Gaissa means ice in Saami — the name has originated from our fascinations of the Norwegian Forest Cats and the cultures of the people of Scandinavia.
Our icy cattery is small indeed: we share our flat in Cracow with three cats: Hacker U'Lidy*PL, a neuter, and two females: Metanira AB-Cat*PL (from one of the oldest NFO catteries in Poland) and her grand-daughter, Mimbla Dwa Susy*PL. In the beginning of 2011 we suffered a great loss: Jankes U'Lidy*PL, our beloved neutered boy, has left us forever. We miss him each day... In the middle of 2010 Elrilar's Viresse was spayed and moved to my parents' place to live with the biggest love of her feline heart — my mother. Our cattery is bound to remain relatively small, as our cats are first and foremost our friends and members of our family and we will not be parted from them for the sake of cattery's existence. Yet my mother has always been Viresse's favourite person and Viresse has always been my mother's favourite cat. One just can't stand in the way of true love, I guess.
We are a member of DCC, a member of Felis Polonia, and our cattery is registered with Federation Internationale Feline (F.I.Fe.).
Every breeder or even every breed fancier interprets the breed standard in his own way. We are no exception to the rule as we would like our cats to embody our vision of a Norwegian Forest Cat. Whether we will succeed is a different question altogether... We would like to breed strong, healthy cats with well-balanced tempers, well socialized, inquisitive, courageous, gentle and attached to their humans. Our ambition is that our kittens would be large and strong of build, with magnificent fur, head shape according to the standard and, above all, the famous mysterious look of the almond, slightly obliquely set eyes. We are also quite conservative when it comes to colours: we do not breed the ‘new’ colours: amber or light amber.
Breeding cats is not an exact science, there is a million things which can go... not wrong, but plainly different than planned. Well, two heads (and catteries) are better than one, so we decided to combine our efforts with cattery Dwa Susy*PL. We share the same vision of a Norwegian Forest Cat, same attitude towards breeding and — last but not least — cats. The daughter of our Metanira, Freyja, lives in the cattery Dwa Susy, while we are proud to share our home with her daughter, Mimbla. We have joint "custody" of the lovely Jane Marple Dwa Susy*PL. Together, we make plans, we dream of preserving the traditional type and precious, old pedigrees of the NFO. I really do believe that co-operation between breeders is a key to success!
Our cats don't roam outside, they can enjoy fresh air on the fully secured balcony, which is a great vantage point. They are tested for HCM (echo) and GSD IV (genetic test).
